Amazon Selling Glossary for Arbitrage and FBA Sellers
This glossary explains the terms and slang you hear across retail arbitrage, online arbitrage, and FBA selling. Each entry is a short, plain definition so a new seller can follow a conversation, a sourcing video, or a listing without guessing what a word means. Where a fee is mentioned, check Amazon's current fees because rates change.

Common Amazon Selling Terms Explained
What is retail arbitrage?
Retail arbitrage is buying an item from a physical store and reselling it for a higher price on Amazon. Sellers look for clearance and markdown deals that still sell well online.
What is online arbitrage?
Online arbitrage is buying an item from one online store and reselling it on Amazon for a profit. It works like retail arbitrage but you source from websites instead of walking into a store.
What is FBA?
FBA stands for Fulfillment by Amazon, where you send inventory to Amazon and they store, pack, and ship it to buyers. Amazon also handles customer service and returns for those orders.
What is FBM or merchant fulfilled?
FBM stands for Fulfillment by Merchant, which means you store the product yourself and ship each order directly to the buyer. It is also called merchant fulfilled.
What is sales rank?
Sales rank, also called Best Sellers Rank, is a number Amazon assigns to a product to show how well it sells in its category. A lower number means the item sells faster than others in that category.
What are replens?
Replens, short for replenishables, are products you can buy and sell again and again because they restock reliably. Sellers like them because they create steady, repeatable income.
What is ungating?
Ungating is the process of getting Amazon approval to sell in a restricted category or brand. You usually submit invoices or other documents to prove you can source the products.
What is a prep center?
A prep center is a third-party service that receives your inventory, then labels, packages, and ships it into Amazon on your behalf. Sellers use them to save time or when they buy in high volume.
What is Zonos?
Zonos is a cross-border platform that handles duties and customs when you ship into the US. For sellers shipping from overseas, how it is set up affects whether a shipment gets charged duty.
What is an HS code?
An HS code is the customs classification number for a product. It tells customs what the item is and what duty rate applies, so putting the correct code on a shipment decides how much duty you pay.
What does zero-rated mean in shipping?
Zero-rated means a product carries no import duty. Which items are zero-rated depends on the current tariff classification, so sellers confirm each product rather than assume.
